Answers:

History.
Of course, you never studied that, so just take you little pills and go sit in the corner.
The government will provide for you little one.

They're meaningless, worthless trailer trash who need a meth-fueled fantasy like that to make themselves think they're important.

The only ones afraid of a responsible armed citizen is the criminal element. Define the gun crazies.

You truly need to look at instances of problems modern governments have had when the population decides it has had enough!
Ireland, Yugoslavia, Lebanon are but a few such cases.
Consider what happened during the revolts in several Arab nations a few years back.
Also study the reasons why the US could not win the war by military force in Vietnam.
It would also be wise to study the demographics and nature of the military. The military is comprised of citizens also and as such some times mutinies happen or an officer takes his unit and men into actions which are anti-government.
As you said our military has weapons that can wipe out complete cities. It would be a shame for some one to force an issue in this nation that results in the type of destruction we see in countries where forces are being used to round up a few hundred men who have rifles.
If the government is not concerned about it, then maybe we should be concerned about our government.

Was Cruz a gun crazy?

Our country came to that conclusion by winning the American Revolution and immortalizing the idea as a part of the 2nd Amendment to the US Constitution. Of course the whole intent was to avoid the need for a standing federal army in the first place, which would result in citizens having more arms under their control than the federal government. Everything changed due to the civil war when the south learned that it could not stand against the federal government and the federal government started to believe it needed a bigger federal army. Fast forward ahead to WII and our place as leaders of the free world and all of a sudden we needed a standing military to go fight battles and protect our interests all over the world, not just defend the US. Nonetheless, there are still people that believe in the letter of the Constitution, no matter how it has been since corrupted.

History books and facts. Any government that wants to control the population must disarm them first. Democrats have a silly notion that big government knows what's best. That is false. Big government feeds itself and the egos behind the curtain.

From watching too many Spaghetti Westerns

Dunno
But it was probably just before they started bribing Republican politicians to vote against reforms

They do have influence on politicians, as any group does. They can use the influence of votes and donations.
