You can. Expect to be fired and possibly arrested for assault and battery.

That's an excellent way to get fired on the spot. Physical assault is a fireable offense - talking trash is not.

You'd be liable for assault or battery, both criminally and civilly. Common sense tells me that it would only end with your being the initial aggressor, in which case mere provocation by words would not be enough to mitigate your liability.

If your workplace has an HR department, talk to them. Talk to your supervisor. American jurisprudence is trending toward ensuring employers prevent hostile workplace environments, which include harassment. There are legal repercussions for your employer failing to stop harassment in the workplace.

You can make more poor decisions. Just be prepared for the consequences.
