What do you think about firing good employees for a dirty shirt when they work outside?

might depend on how much public scrutiny they come under and how this impacts on your company if they have some company identification
sometimes in the course of a day it would be impossible not to get one's shirt soiled

I’d have to know more about the job. When you work for someone, you represent them. If this was first thing in the morning the boss might have a point. If this was well into the day and it was a dirty job, I can’t understand the logic.

It depends on what they do-Examples: Construction,Road Paving,landscaping and other jobs that require to be outside where you get dirty I really think they should not be fired especially if they do not want to get their other clothes dirty.Becuase clothes cost money I can understand wearing a dirty shirt in this case.

Showing up in dirty clothes, depends. If actually dirty and you are unwashed...yeah, that's a problem.

If you are a painter and have paint on your pants...no big deal. If you are a laborer who simply decided to wear yesterday's shirt...that's a problem.

The person wasn't that good of an employee. He or she was probably a major pain in the behind with only marginal job performance. So they were just better off letting the person go, and they used whatever reason they could.

That doesn’t sound like it’s really about the shirt

Flimsy excuse if you ask me, there is more to it than that

You can dress nice for any work, but if it is the work iteslf that will soil your clothing, then all you need to do is get permission beforehand. Maybe bring clothing to change into. If it is going to be a dirty environment, some part of the issue belongs on the company to provide cloting or make allowances for it. Of course ina right-to-work state you can be released for any reason, but I don't think wearing dirty clothing to work and being fired without notice is one of them.

No excuse for dirty clothes for more than one day.
