I did just that a few years ago, on the NYC Subway. I called that persons credit/debit card companies and advised that I found their cards. As it turned out, the cards were already cancelled by the owner. The credit card company was amazed that they actually found an honest person to report the find.

If there was ID, I would attempt to contact that person.
If not, I would turn it in to the police.

Note: The 'Best Answer" you selected is 100% DEAD WRONG. It is actually ILLEGAL for the card issuer to tell you ANYTHING other than that they will cancel the card they issued.

Normally a wallet would also have the person's id inside, If there was ID, I would either attempt to contact the owner or would put the wallet in an envelope, address it to the owner and drop it in a mailbox. With no return address the post office will deliver it postage due

If there was no ID, I would see if one of the cards was from a financial institution that had a local office, and take it into the branch asking the manager to contact the owner and return his wallet

Turn it over to the police. I've done this twice in my life

I've already turned the three I found over to the police. Why?

if it was your wallet , what would you want me to do with it ??????

Try to return it to the owner of course.

No matter how short on money I am, I can't do anything with someone else's debit card anyway. Plus the owner might be just as poor as I am

Let the cops figure it out. I walk a lot, and find 'things' all the time - Found a driver's licence, somebody car keys WITH a handcuff key, and turn it all in.

If I can make contact give it to them, otherwise more weed for me.

bring it to the local police for lost and found. or see if there's an ID with contact info to try to find the owner my self first.

update: if i were to ever lose my wallet, i would like to hope a person who finds it does the right thing, and try to return it. so why should i break that sense, and not try to return a lost wallet my self? also, it is possible if you try to use the debit card, assuming it hasn't been replaced already, that the owner could file a police report as it is stolen and possible theft and fraud charges against you as well. especially since you have their ID, and try to get access to the debit card by pretending to be that person.
