I am looking for an SSD to replace my old HDD in my mid-2010 MacBook white (A1324). I've done a lot of shopping and have narrowed it down to two drives: The Kingston A400 or Kingston UV400. There are priced very similarly, and I can't decide what

Answers:

If you are going to just limit yourself to 120GB of storage there is no point in even changing to a solid state drive. My advice is to wait it out, save up about 120 more dollars and get you an solid state drive that can hold 500GB.

Think about it, your hard drive probably holds between 250 and 320 GB of storage. But you feel its slow. You are so desperate for faster speed that you'll compromise storage to make the laptop faster.

But what happens if you become interested in downloading movies, or a zhit ton of music. Your stuck with 120 GB which isnt much when you think about it.

You certainly cant do any gaming modern gaming with that amount of space (really you cant do any modern gaming at all with that laptop).

So my advice is to save a bit longer for a 500GB hard drive and deal with the slow speed. Something else too, you cant polish a turd. Perhaps you should shop around for a refurbished laptop. You can find old laptops with fast processing speed for very cheap these days.

I use an old dell business laptop that is an i7, has 4gh of ram, and a 500gb hard drive with Windows 7 loaded on it. I paid $180 for it.

Something to think about.

The A400 is slightly faster, maybe 5-10% faster reading, and 50% faster writing

Buy the chicken

I am not sure whether it is wise to replace the hard drive of an 8 year old Macbook. It has reached the end of its life and other parts may fail at any time. However for practical purposes you won't notice any difference between the two SSDs so just shop around for the cheapest - Kingston is a reasonable brand
