Answers:

Some find it the only way to chill out esp on a Fri or Sat night or think a meal incomplete without wine. I do not, I've been teetotal on health/medical grounds since 2001 and was only an occasional light drinker before that. I do not miss it and it annoys me that TV cooks tend to think everyone will want alcohol with their meals, and seldom suggest an alternative. Alcohol is highly addictive and although I'm not a strict prohibitionist,[it is possible not to drink oneself but not be prohibitionist] I strongly recommend that young people who haven't started yet, not to, and those who have just started, to stop before they can't. Just one point, you seem to prefer smoking and suggest it as an alternative, just be aware smoking is just as addictive unhealthy and dangerous as alcoholic drinking [it can lead to heart disease, lung cancer and respiratory disease]

Escapism. They don't actually like it they just do it to escape

there should be MANY more smart people like you to educate all the drinkers (and drunks) out there as to the evils of DEMON RUM.

Your first statement is wrong - I believe you are the only person ever to say that, "smoke will bring the same pleasure to people as alchohol (sic)."

People drink alcohol because they like the taste and the effects and sometimes the smell and appearance. In some circumstances it's also socially and culturally expected.

Obviously, if you can't even stand the smell of alcoholic drinks and you choose not to be with people who are drinking them then staying away is probably the best thing.

it is an acquired taste

You don't have to make an excuse to skip the company's parties. Attend and drink non-alcoholic beverages. This is perfectly acceptable, and you do not have to offer anyone who asks a reason for your choice to do that. (You also are not automatically the designated driver just because you're sober.)

People react to alcohol in different ways. If you don't care for your own reaction, then don't drink. Easy decision.

Alcoholic beverages are no different than foods when it comes to varieties, and the complexity of combinations of flavors. In short, people can consume alcoholic beverages simply for the enjoyment. Yes, people abuse them. That is not an excuse for denying those who don't the experience of enjoyment. The illnesses you describe are brought on by alcohol abuse, not by all consumption of alcohol.

Some people like it, some don't. Same for pizza, pasta, juices, ice cream, soda, golf, soccer, tennis, marketing, finance, cars, bicycles, boobs, and literally everything else you can think of.
