Is it possible to take a video from the past?

Let me explain as we know the speed of light isn’t unlimited hence we see things as they are in the past the moon 1 sec in the past the sun around 4 min in the past knowing this....let’s pretend there’s an alien race observing us from a star 2,000 light y

Answers:

Theoretically it's possible. But then, those aliens must have a very good camera and telescope to watch Jesus walk over the sea. Then record it, jump into their Warp drive and give us the tape. LOL....would such an advanced civilization even use tapes..? Probably a kind of storage device we never heard off. In theory it's possible, in practice, highly unlikely.

Aliens, Christ...What's next - the Easter Bunny. This forum is for serious questions and answers, with the occasional Uranus joke.

I say no. It would be impossible to see earth from thousands of light years away, even. with a big telescope. Its resolving power would not be great enough. And faster than light traveling is impossible.

Only if you still have a working Betamax player.

And where would you find that place, exactly?

<the [Sun] around 4 min in the past> Closer to 8.5 minutes, actually, but that's nitpicking.
.
<and they took a video of ancient Romans or even Christ himself> (Well, if Jesus really existed in the first place, how could you tell it was him?) The real question would be whether a telescope 2000 light-years away could have a large enough diameter to attain sufficient angular resolution, as well as to collect enough photons, to resolve such small objects. But for the sake of argument let's stipulate, since we're talking about an advanced civilization, that they are able to build a telescope mirror of, say, a radius of a couple of AU, and somehow knew where to point it.
.
<and then since [they're] advanced enough they [somehow] travel to [Earth] almost instantaneously> That's not necessary, actually, since no matter how long the travel time would be, they would still be able to deliver the same images of ancient Earth to us, just farther into our future. But sure, in principle, this is theoretically possible, but hardly plausible.
.
.

IF all those things existed then yes it would be possible for an alien race 2000 light years away to video the Earth as it was 2000 years ago and instantaneously travel to Earth to show us the video.

Theoretically, yes. You're taking a video of the past every time you film celestial objects.

Well... assuming they can travel faster than light.... Yes, that would be possible.
