questions?

What cameras do you use?

A Canon EOS 20D with a EF-S 17-85mm, a set of Kenko extension tubes, a EF 50mm lens. I also have a Canon EOS-Rebel G, a Finepix 3800 digital and a PowerShot A720 IS.

What advice do you have?

I’m not a professional photographer and probably not even a good photographer. But I can give you some advice on lessons I’ve learned.

Buy a good camera but better yet buy good glass. A cheap leans will hurt you every time. Use a tripod. Some wiggly pictures are cool but for the most part they are not. Take an ass load of pictures. On my hikes or walks I might shoot 200 pictures and only get 20 that I really like. Get photoshop. Not to mangle your pictures up but 9 times out of 10 they will need to be edited, resized or what not.

Shoot a lot! I cannot stress this enough. Try different angles. Try different settings, even if you don’t know what they mean. Get low, get high (sure, if pot helps). Try things you haven’t seen someone else do and try doing things someone else has done. You never know what you’ll discover, about photography and yourself.

Keep a shooting journal. If I’m trying a new technique, I’ll track things I did in a little note pad. This is great for things like shooting fireworks. You don’t get the chance to see them often, so if you keep some notes, you’ll know what it was you did the last time you were shooting.

And last but not least; photograph what is most interesting to you. Don’t get caught up in photographing what will be interesting to others or what will get you noticed. Just simply look at the world like a child and focus on what you find interesting.
